When running the upgrade from 8.25x to 9.x on Dell hardware ; Occasionally you will run into an issue while trying to install the ISO file where FireMon will return the following error “Could not find available disk for installation”, and fail to install the ISO.
This error can be resolved by simply re-configuring the RAID disks on your server. Below are the steps for how to execute this.
- Enter life cycle controller
The first step is to boot into your server’s life cycle controller, this can be done on IDRAC via selecting the boot to life cycle controller option under the boot section of your remote viewer. If you are running the installation on prem via a USB ,you will be prompted to boot into LCC via the standard boot options readout at the top of your screen after powering on.
- Select OS installation
From the Life cycle controller, please select the OS installation option.
- Select Configure RAID First
Once you are in the OS installer you will be presented with an option to first configure the RAID, please select this option and select next.
- Select a Controller
In this step you will select a controller, this can be left as default ( note you can see your current RAID configuration). To advance past this screen please press next.
- Select RAID Level
Here you will select the RAID level you wish to have on your virtual disk, FireMon by default has RAID 10 installed for Application servers, Data Base servers, and All in One servers. For Data Collectors we have RAID 1 by default. Please note if you select RAID 0 this will remove the ability for mirroring, which can negatively effect disk recovery.
- Select Physical Disk
Here we will select the physical disks that the RAID will be mapped to. Since FireMon is the only software that will be running on your server please use the select all option of selecting physical pools, the protocol, media type. encryption capability, and span length can be left at their default values.
- Virtual Disk Attributes
Please enter in a virtual disk name (for example ‘firemon’) and click next, the other values can be left as default.
- Final check
Please ensure that all of the information entered is correct, after you are done you can select finish. After this please enter yes at the RAID configuration warning prompt, this step is what applies your changes. This will resolve your issue and allow you to install FireMon.
Once you have reconfigured the RAID you can immediately boot to the virtual media again, or you can simply follow the prompts in LCC deploy OS operation (this is recommended).
OS Deployment Steps
- Select operating system
Please leave the boot mode and secure boot options to their default values, for operating system please select Any Other Operating System from the drop down menu. After this select next.
- Select Installation Mode
Please select manual install and click next.
- Insert OS Media
Please ensure that the media is mounted, then select next.
- Reboot the system
This is the final check before the system boots to the ISO, confirm that the entered information is correct, and select finished to boot to the ISO. As long as you have followed the above steps, your issue should be resolved, and you will be able to install with the ISO.
